Live Space - the exhibition

a one-evening exhibition at <> tag.
Stille Veerkade 19, Den Haag
Thursday 4 December

works with sound, light and space by students of the Institute of Sonology:

Sophokles Arvanitis , Billy Bultheel, Greg Grigoropoulos and Casper Schipper.

created during a workshop run by Justin Bennett.

1. Casper Schipper “Feedback for Bassdrum”

We see a drum and a microphone. The drum listens to its own vibrations, which we can see as well as hear. It makes “feedback” but also makes decisions about what to do next, and the live microphone makes the piece sensitive to its surroundings.

2. Billy Bultheel “Ode aan Nika “

Another feedback system –this time a visual one using a camera looking at it’s own projection. Normally this results in an “endless mirror” effect reflecting everything that passes the eye of the camera but here Bultheel changes the image subtly causing the circuit to adopt different behaviours. It also listens to its environment, reacting to the other pieces in the show.

3. Sophokles Arvanitis “Transparent Images”

A sculpture which creates and changes space – it fills the room with sound, exposing the acoustics of the space, but also introduces sounds that appear to come from elsewhere, causing events to happen.

4. Greg Grigoropoulos “Dr. Who?”

An environment where synthesised sounds expand into physical objects – strings, pieces of wood and metal containers. The often very quiet sounds travel out from one place through the strings defining and filling space.

Due to the acoustics of the <>TAG space and the sensitive, responsive qualities of the works, these pieces all interact to form a larger composition which we can experience by wandering through the spaces as active listeners combining the sounds in our heads.
